The upper radiator hose on the Jaaaaaaaag is looking rather past it, resembling a balloon much more than a coolant pipe. A few others look a little bulgy, so I figured I’d pick up the whole set, as is my custom, and do them all at once.
Huh... Ro ckAuto doesn’t really sell very many pipes. That is.... odd. I’ll look it up....
OH WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS!?
Oh good, it comes with a flow diagram...
Well that is... terrifying. I guess I’ll poke around, see which parts need replacing and go from there...

Huh. Well, good luck with that. Guess I’ll be spending the rest of the day wondering why that engine needs that much cooling equipment.

You may want to call in A-Gang for that one.

Yeah, just pull the frint clip off. It'll be easier.

Fair haha. Though Project Golf Ball had... quite a few too.

I miss working on these sometimes ;) It paid very well to replace all those hoses, they get soft and swell. Once one starts, many more will follow.

That looks... not fun

Dual a ir to water intercoolers, dual zone heating (if equipped), engine oil cooler, it all required some pretty ingenious routing in such a confined space.

For cooling, probably.

well, it’s no “remove lock carrier to service position..”

I envy how detailed those diagrams are.

I'm just trying to figure out if you spell Jaaaaag the same each time? Is there a set number is A's or is it dependent on the prospective cost of the repair you are posting about?

I choose to believe it is based on how caddish I think the car is being that that moment in time. Or at least, yes, how far its hands are into my wallet.

I changed all… well most of the coolant hoses in my 85 XJ6 recently. There were plenty on that too, especially if you included the little ones for keeping the throttle warm in cold weather (which I did not change).

Air cooling, you type?

Showed to a mechanic friend, only reply i got out of him was “fuck”.
Not gonna lie, it’s about all i’d muster too...

That “dual coolant control valve” is just an excuse to have 2 extra hoses, isn’t it?
![]() 11/30/2019 at 16:33 |

See that is the thing.. . The one you don’t change will be the one that blows haha. Land Rovers like my Discovery are known for blowing heads when the throttle heater gasket blows without warning and dumps all the coolant out without the driver noticing.

Yeah on the bright side they’re good diagrams. On the downside they don’t have part numbers. I do have the factory parts manual, but search of the part numbers given in that don’t return any results....

For real haha. I feel like most cars use multiple diverters rather than variable coolant flow for multi-zone climate control... but what do I know...

DON’T TELL ME THIS.

A ctually one somewhat unique feature of the series 3 XJ6 is there’s a coolant level warning light. And I know for a fact it works as I blew two hoses (which in hindsight did look pretty bad) before resolving to replace them all.

The time it takes for those lights to come on is often more than enough time for the engine to overheating and fuck shit up.

Welcome to the world of forced induction! Be thankful it’s not a turbo V12 with it’s dozen heat exchangers, two different cooling systems, power steering lines, and ABC lines. So hey, it could be worse!

At first I thought you were mad about the price and then I saw the category......I didn’t know Volvo produced Jaguars!!!!!!!!!!/s

Yeah , just so happens that my own cars (so far) have all been old-school enough to not even have heater control valves, much less dual zone ones. One hose in, one hose out.

As an engineer the diagrams satisfy me. As someone who works on cars OH GOD

In other news I took my Jag for a nice drive the other day and the windows immediately fogged over confirming my long-standing suspicion the heater core was starting with a leak.
Fortunately I’ve read from multiple sources that there’s a slightly hackish method for replacing it without removing the entire interior. In short, you remove the steering column and cut a short length of the pipes out and then you can slide it out the side, replacing the cut section with short hoses.

And so it begins … Hope to have this done in a couple evenings. Very cold this week though.
Crusty water pipe is crusty.

New heater core was a terrible fit with pipes not quite the same. Much dremeling of the cover plate was required. But heat works and no leaks on the first try!

That is awesome! The only heater core I’ve done is on the Saab and, for a heater core, it is pretty easy. Good thing too because I’ve done it four times. (Replacement units fail within a year because China)

Also: Do you not have posting rights on Oppo? You should find a authorship thread (I’d help but I’m under caffeinated ) and request if you want.

I think someone tried to do it a while back but it never seemed to work. It was stuck at the top of my notifications for ages.
